Is there anything in this world as important as a healthy breath? Diagnosis and treatment of nasal diseases and tracheal stenosis are conditions that require specialization.
What Causes Shortness of Breath?
Shortness of breath can be due to a disorder of any tissue between the lungs and nose.
Breathing starts when air enters our nose through our nostrils, after this air passes through our nose, it first moves in our throat, then passes between the open vocal cords and reaches the windpipe. It travels through the windpipe and reaches our lungs.
Which diseases cause shortness of breath?
Shortness of breath in an individual who does not have a disease related to the lungs and heart can be observed for the following reasons.
- Nasal bone curvature
- Nasal flesh growth
- Polyp formation in the nose
- Adenoid and tonsil enlargement
- Nasal allergy
- Unilateral vocal cord paralysis
- Bilateral vocal cord paralysis
- Vocal cord adhesion
- String pitch
- Tracheal stenosis
- Laryngomalacia
- Tracheomalacia
- Choking attack (laryngospasm)
- Persistent cough that does not go away
All of these conditions can cause shortness of breath of different severity. In cases of shortness of breath, the patient should be examined from the nose to the lungs to make a complete diagnosis. Afterwards, special treatments can be made.
The conditions mentioned above, which are related to the nose, can be easily performed in many centers. However, especially for vocal cord paralysis, vocal cord adhesion (Glottic Web, Posterior Glottic Stenosis) and tracheal stenosis, special surgical techniques and accumulated experience in this field are required.
How to Treat Shortness of Breath?
The first step in the treatment of shortness of breath is to identify the underlying cause of shortness of breath. For this purpose, a detailed ear, nose, nose and throat examination should be performed, and in addition, the presence of possible stenosis in the trachea should be evaluated with a bronchoscopy examination to be performed under outpatient conditions.
Once the cause of shortness of breath has been identified, the necessary treatment should be planned. There are 3 main areas that can cause shortness of breath. Nose, vocal cords (throat) and windpipe.
How is Tracheal Stenosis Treated?
Once tracheal stenosis is detected, treatment should be planned as soon as possible. The preferred method of treatment is endoscopic expansion of the trachea through the mouth with the help of a laser and balloon. In cases where this is insufficient, open tracheotomy is one of the ideal solutions.
