      How is Swallowing Assessment Performed?<\/h4><\/div><\/div><\/div>

      Swallowing assessment is the most critical step for patients with dysphagia. The first stage of the assessment is a very detailed history of swallowing difficulties. This should be followed by a physical examination performed by an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist. If deemed necessary after this examination, advanced swallowing assessments can be performed. These assessments include the Functional Endoscopic Swallowing Test or the Video Fluoroscopic Swallowing Test. Based on these assessments, therapy may be recommended as a treatment option. <\/p><\/div><\/div>

      How is Swallowing Therapy Performed?<\/h4><\/div><\/div><\/div>
      Many different exercises or methods can be used in swallowing therapy. These exercises can be self-administered without the need for a device, or they may sometimes require the guidance of a therapist. Swallowing therapists decide on the frequency and timing of these exercises under the guidance of a physician. Depending on the patient’s underlying conditions, some special equipment may be used during therapy. This equipment can include kinesio tapes, sticks used for thermal stimulation, toothbrushes, or VitalStim application involving electrical stimulation, among many others.
